Visit The Lakes in Luxury
Whether you prefer walking, cycling or sailing, the Lake District has something for every kind of explorer. If you’re a hiker up for a challenge, Scafell Pike is England’s highest mountain standing at an impressive 3,210 feet. Or you could try the Treetop Trek and take in the views from the 14-metre-high tower before descending via the zip-wire. If cycling is more your thing, hire a bike and ride a forest trail with the family.
For something a little less strenuous, why not try sailing? At 10.5 miles long, Windermere is the largest and most famous in the Lake District. Hire a boat or take a guided cruise to experience the scenic views of the surrounding area from the water. Alternatively, hop aboard one of the local steam trains for a nostalgic journey along the Lake District’s heritage railways.
Other scenic places to visit include Hardknott Roman Fort ruins dating back to the 2nd century and the mysteriously dramatic Castlerigg Stone Circle made up of 38 stones – some three metres tall! Also worth a mention are the Coniston Copper Mines and Honister Slate Mine, for anyone wanting to explore the region’s industrial heritage.
Things to do in the Lake District
The Lake District is well known for its many historical attractions. Hill Top is a quaint farmhouse famous as the former home of Beatrix Potter. Explore the house and its pretty gardens, as well as the vegetable patch that inspired the Peter Rabbit stories. William Wordsworth’s former home is also nearby – find Dove Cottage in Grasmere.
If grand houses are more your thing, Sizergh Castle near Kendal is a fortified yet romantic mansion which contains some of the finest Elizabethan carved overmantels in the country. The elegant estate also hosts the National Trust’s largest limestone rock garden and a pretty water garden.
The more dramatic Muncaster Castle grew from a medieval tower-house and has been privately owned by the Pennington family since 1208. Famous for being Henry VI’s refuge during the War of the Roses, the castle grounds now feature a Hawk and Owl Centre for the entire family to enjoy.
If it’s animals that you want, the Lake District is also home to the UK’s largest collection of freshwater fish at the Lakes Aquarium on the edge of Windermere. Venture a little further afield and you’ll find the South Lakes Safari Zoo in Ulverston. Wander amongst wallabies, watch free-flying macaws soar overhead or try your hand at feeding your favourite animal with a more hands-on experience.
