Lions and lemurs, castles and cathedrals

Herefordshire is alive with history, with castles and cathedrals at every turn. Keep the kids amused with lions and lemurs at the safari park, or let them Go Ape! at Wyre Forest. Try trout fishing at the Hyde or take to the water at Wye Valley Canoes.

Country Kids

Kids love to go wild on site, with pillow fights and Playstations. But nothing beats a change of scene and the options leap from the landscape in Herefordshire.

Kids can swing through the trees at Wyre Forest Go Ape! Zip wires, segways and forest biking are also on the agenda. Or slow the pace at Ludlow Castle, whose old bones never grumble about being clambered over.

At Hereford Cathedral, you can see a copy of the Magna Carta, while getting close to the furry and the fierce is always a good day out at the West Midlands Safari Park.

Elsewhere, you can chug around the tracks at Broomy Hill steam railway, milk a cow at Shortwood Family Farm, walk a llama at Old King Street Farm, or hire a Canadian Canoe at Paddles and Pedals.

For the Grown Ups

Be pampered without leaving the house, with massages, pedicures, manicures and more. Or get comfy, break out the popcorn, pop a cork and fire up a movie.

Elsewhere, shoot clay pigeons, ride horses through the lush landscape or paddle your way down the River Wyre. Try quad-trekking at Peachley, trout fishing at The Hyde, or mountain-boarding at Out to Grass.

Eat out in Michelin-starred style at Mr Underhill’s, awarded Best All-round UK Restaurant by Harden’s Guide, and La Becasse. Will it be wild venison from the Mortimer Forest or belly of Telford pork?

Shoot 18 holes and grab a full English at the 19th gardens at The Bannut, try fresh, local produce at Legges, and stop for a bite and a beer at countless oak-beamed country pubs.
