Visit York to step back in time!
Occupied by Romans from the 1st century, York is packed full of historic sites and attractions. That starts at the medieval walls, with York boasting more miles of intact city walls than any other location in England. Originally built to defend the city, standing 13 feet high, sections of the walls can be seen in the Museum Gardens and around Monk Bar.
Fast-forward to the 9th century and York was occupied by the Danes. Renamed Jorvik (from which its modern name is derived), York was the capital of the Vikings’ British territory. You can delve deeper into the life of the Vikings at JORVIK Viking Centre, which houses fascinating exhibitions on the very site where many of the biggest archaeological discoveries were made.
Step into the 2nd millennium and you’ll find York Castle, which was originally built in 1068 by William the Conqueror. Climb 50 steps up Clifford’s Tower, the castle’s main keep, for panoramic views of the city. Or head to the York Castle Museum, just a stone’s throw away, to feast your eyes on an 18th century prison, and Kirkgate – a recreated Victorian street!
