With a defensive wall stretching over two miles around the city and the largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain, Chester’s roman heritage is still clear today. You can even take a walking tour around the city and delve deep into the city’s past with the help of an authentic guide in roman dress.
After your walk, why not spend some time relaxing in a Green Flag Victorian park? Grosvenor Park is nestled just outside the city walls overlooking the River Dee. Grab a bite to eat at The Lodge Cafe, be entertained at the Open-Air Theatre or take your little ones for a ride on the Miniature Railway. You can also enjoy a cruise along the River Dee or hire your own rowing boat for a more romantic couple’s trip.
If you would prefer some retail therapy during your visit, there are a variety of unusual boutique shops in The Independent Quarter. Here you’ll find Chester Rows, a unique set of two-tiered half-timbered buildings with long galleries now used as shopping arcades. Climb the steps from Watergate Street to find independent clothes shops, art galleries and quirky cafes set back under these historic covered walkways.
