Take a boat on the Thames, have a right royal good time at Windsor, get fed on snail porridge at the Fat Duck, whizz off to London for lights, sights and shows, brave the orbs and dragon boats at Longridge. Life’s a lark in beautiful Berkshire.
Keep kids occupied inside and out in beautiful Berkshire. Head to Maidenhead for cinema, bowling and swimming. Try the skate parks and sports courts at the vast Kidwells Park. Or take the bridge over to Ray Mill Island for birds and guinea pigs, play areas and picnics.
Mess around on land and water at Longridge Activity Centre in Marlow. Climb the walls, make the leap of faith, orb over the water, stack crates, row, canoe, race the dragon boats. If you can dream it up, you can probably do it at Longridge.
Elsewhere, see the Queen’s place at Windsor, meet furry friends at Odds Farm Park, skate the ice in Slough, simulate F1 at the Race Hut, or soar through the skies and sail the seas at Legoland theme park.
See 1930s rural England in miniature at Bekonscot Model Village, Go Ape or ride the segways at Wexham’s Black Park, see the Wind in the Willows exhibition at the river and rowing museum. Berkshire is a lark for country kids.
For the grown-ups
The rolling Chilterns and quintessentially English villages make Berkshire a beautiful diversion from regular life. Just down the road is Cookham High Street. Worth a meander, it bursts with boutique shops, cosy pubs and quaint restaurants. Just across the river is Marlow, visit in June to see the famous Marlow Regatta.
For lovers of chemistry-set cuisine, Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck is just five miles away at Bray. Voted the Best Restaurant in the World, Fat Duck offerings include red-cabbage gazpacho, salmon poached in liquorice gel and snail porridge. Of course, world renowned dining is also available at The Waterside Inn nearby.
Want to be whisked in to The Smoke? Trains from Cookham will speed you to Paddington for lights, sights and shows. Back in Berks, walk the gentle hills and riversides, or take a boat on the Thames.
There’s golf, tennis and a spa on offer at Stoke Park and polo at the famous Guards Club. You can back a nag and neck a drink or two at Epsom, Ascot, Windsor and Sandown, and top tennis is just a drop shot away at Queen’s Club and Wimbledon.
