650 acres of sanity

There’s plenty to do here. Barbecues on the terrace, kayaks on the lake, chilling in the shared spa and pool. But you might just want to gaze: at the lapping lakewater from the terraces or at the stunning, calm interiors here among the 650 acres of sanity and serenity.

The secret of serenity

Chill out, kick back and pour yourself a long cold one. Sleeping ten, Orchard Lakehouse, at The Lakes By Yoo in the Cotswolds, is the secret of serenity. If the lapping lakewater beneath the terraces doesn’t calm you, the interior’s neutral shades, barn-wood cladding and glass walls surely will.

When they ask you what you did on holiday, be honest. Just say, “We did a lot of gazing.” There’s a lot to gaze at here. The stunning views over the woodlands and lake. The calming beauty of the materials.

Live your days on the large terrace overlooking Longdoles Lake, glass in hand and chicken kebab sizzling on your skewer. Wave to the passing boats; maybe you’ll join them later in your free kayaks. Chill off in the shared pool and spa. Or maybe wander up to the solarium terrace at cocktail hour to test the loungers and egg chair.

When the sun dips, hit the open-plan living area for Sky TV, Nespresso and good times shared with the best people you know. The L-shaped settee is made for lazing, the Hirst and Banksy artwork adds a racy edge to life, and the log fire a homely touch. You’ll have to leave eventually, but feel free to take the serenity with you.

Even the most highly strung could chill here. Kick off your shoes, put your feet up and revel in time spent with the people you love in three-storey surroundings it’s impossible not to adore. As the log fire flickers and the glass walls lend a warm frame to the views, the seven shades of serenity that surround you could calm an ogre.

But it’s not just the barn-wood cladding, the split-face tiling and the homely yet huge sofa that will have you purring like a lost cat that finally came home. It’s the bells and whistles: brew your coffee in the Nespresso machine, crank up a family film night on the Blu-ray player, and set up your soundtrack on the Sonos.

Gardens and grounds

Listen? Can you hear it? That’s the sound of silence. The quiet at The Lakes by Yoo is disturbed only by the occasional trout breaking the surface of the water. Cast a line from your terrace and catch one for supper.

Cool off in Longdoles Lake, or keep dry and explore by kayak. Chill on the large terrace overlooking the lake, or on the solarium terrace for sundowners with its comfy loungers and egg chair.

Lemurs, lions, racing and retail

Well, kids, will it be the Cotswold Wildlife Park for lemurs and lions, Birdland for parrots and pelicans, or a hawk walk around Cheltenham? Grown-up kids will enjoy pottering for England around tearooms, antique shops and bookshops, or Cheltenham for racing and retail.
