Country kids

Herefordshire is bursting with kid-friendly stuff – be it animal adventures, adrenaline bursts or just good old-fashioned fresh air.

Clean country air is plentiful at the Bryngwyn Riding Centre, with a variety of hacks, many designed for children. There are more lungfuls of fresh air with the llama trekking at Old King Street Farm, and plenty of healthy walks over the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains.

There’s fauna as well as flora here: take a trip to the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo to get up close to 30 species of butterfly, experience all things cute and cuddly at the Small Breeds Farm and Owl Centre, and enjoy pet handling, pony rides and ferret racing at Cantref Adventure Farm.

Row the River Wye with Celtic Canoes, bounce for England at the Boing Zone trampoline park, try archery, futsal or rollerskating at The Core, take to the trees at Go Ape, or ride the Perrygrove steam railway to enjoy treetop adventures in the Forest of Dean.

For the grown-ups

Stock up on fresh local fare at farmers’ markets in Kington, Hereford and Hay-on-Wye. Fish for salmon, trout and grayling on the Wye, or try coarse fishing on the lake for carp, bream, tench and pike. Shoot pretend pigeons with Laser Clay, or 18 holes at Kington Golf Club, the highest in England.

Rent bikes from Drover Cycles in Hay on Wye, or take a four-legged ride at Bryngwyn Riding Centre. Walk the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains and Snowdonia, or try more outdoor action with Mountain Mayhem’s offroad buggies, quad-bikes, shooting, paintballing and caving.

Chill out awhile with a little pampering at Wye Leisure Spa or take a high-flying tour of the Black Mountains with Tiger Helicopters. Marvel at the Mappa Mundi at Hereford Cathedral, see the last Capability Brown landscape at Berrington Hall, take a tipple at the Chase Distillery or tour the Monkland Cheese Dairy.

Vulture some culture at The Courtyard, have a flutter at Hereford Racecourse, brave the rock faces or the River Wye rapids, or follow the Cider Route, a wonderful driving tour of the Herefordshire and Wye Valley cider producers.
