The Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains provide fun and entertainment for all. All kinds of local activity can be arranged, for any age and ability. The scenery of the Brecon Beacons is beautiful and diverse – rolling countryside and valleys, wide open spaces to the wild beauty of the waterfalls and caves. The National Park has its own history and heritage, and its own cuisine, traditions, myths and culture for you to explore during your stay at Felin Newydd.
There are a huge number of things going on in the National Park throughout the year, including the internationally known Brecon Jazz and Hay Literature Festival.
Felin Newydd has acres of gardens and grounds for the children to explore. Use what nature and land provides and have your own private foraging lesson within the grounds at Felin Newydd. Dive into the kitchen afterwards and start a celebration of the wonderful plants & ingredients you have found by preparing a feast for the rest of the group. Visit the Black Mountains Falconry and Archery Centre. After an introduction to the birds, children are taught the basics of handling them safely before they start to actually fly the hawks, owls, and buzzards. For a day of action and adventure on the land and in the water head to Black Mountain Activities for canoeing, rock climbing, gorge walking and high ropes courses. And for pony trekking you’ve a choice of three good stables nearby: Tregoyd Mountain riders at three Cocks; Ellesmere Riding Centre; and Llangors Riding Centre at Llangors.
Felin Newydd House is set within 50 acres of garden and parkland for you to enjoy an activity in. Country pursuits, butlers, trips, entertainment, musicians, jugglers, sheep dogs trials, shooting and fishing – whatever you require we will try to oblige. Try your hand at clay pigeon shooting. The former shooting champion of Wales and shooting instructor, Lawrence Jones, will come and set up his trap in the grounds by prior arrangement. Our closest purpose built shooting ground is less than 5 miles away – Woodland Park Shooting Ground. Enjoy a game of croquet. A truly fantastic game of skill, strategy, conniving, back stabbing and short term alliances for the whole family. The court is generally always set up on the main lawn. Skill and imaginative play may be improved via the inclusion of a small bar or a large jug of Pimms. The Triffrwd is the beautiful stream which winds its way through the grounds and gardens. It is home to brown trout, Millers thumbs, the occasional otter and our native White-clawed Crayfish. Tony, aka The Solution, is the family’s ex ghillie and what he does not know about fishing is not worth knowing. Tony is available to show you the pools and keep you entertained with fishy knowledge and stories. Talgarth is home to the Black Mountain Gliding Club, trial lessons are bookable. An indoor climbing & high ropes centre, the Llangors Activity Centre is just a few miles from Felin Newydd as well.
