Kids ahoy!

Right from the door, kids can run along the shingly front with dog in tow, hunting for fossils and splashing in the surf. Find more fossils at the Bridport Museum, take a Charmouth Fossil Walk or discover the Ammonite Pavement at Lyme Regis. Or just do kid things on fine beaches at Swanage, Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Kimmeridge.

Meet 250 Spanish beach chimpanzees at Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre, the world’s largest of its kind. Copy them on the high ropes and zip wires of The Tunnel Tree Tops. Or ride the Devon Belle observation car through the Purbeck countryside on the Swanage Railway.

There are lovely seafront walks to be had for grown-ups at Lister Gardens while the kids battle it out over mini golf, table tennis and putting. Or visit the Axe Valley Wildlife Park to feed the birds, meet the snakes and tarantulas, and say hi to the armadillo, zebra, lemur and flamingos.

Plenty of options at the Jurassic Fun Centre, including a dip in the pool or fun pool, ten-pin bowling, the gym and the restaurant. Fill up on fresh air and fun at Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park, with its go-karts, dinosaur trail, sandcastle building and furry friends. Or hold on tight for a blast around the bay with Lyme RIB Rides.

For the grown ups

Town Mill’s a working watermill that’s worth a trip, still milling flour after 600 years from the water that passes over the waterwheel. Head to the Furleigh Estate vineyard for a tour and a taste of the wine and cheese on a Friday or Saturday. Or catch cinema, music and live shows at The Marine Theatre.

Bridport Market’s the place for local produce, clothing, antiques and jewellery. Or waste a couple of hours pottering the valley garden at Mapperton House with its dovecote and courtyard. Take a sunset walk along the coast road at Portland. Or sip hoppy, keg beers and cask ales at The Lyme Regis Brewery.

This is the Jurassic coast, and rocks, fossils and stunning landforms are the order of the day on classic sites such as Durdle Door, Charmouth and Lulworth Cove. From the doorstep, walk The Cobb just like Meryl Streep in The French Lieutenant’s Woman. Or take a trip around Lyme Bay with City Cruises to Swanage from Poole.

Bring your clubs to play the beautiful sea-view 18-hole course, driving range and putting green at Bridport and West Dorset Golf Club. Head to Langmoor and Lister Gardens for the sculpture trail, but stay for the mini golf. Or take a boat to Brownsea Island to spot dunlin, kingfishers, terns, oystercatchers and red squirrels.
